Maegor’s parents were killed in a pirate raid when he was young, but was picked up by the salt beards that put the aforementioned pirates to the axe. The dwarven sailors were pirate hunters sailing the southern parts of the sword coast for their quarry taking a cut of whatever they recovered from pirates. Maegor started out as a servant to the captain until he was old enough to run powder below deck. His strength and speed made him excellent at it until he grew too tall to effectively navigate below deck. That’s when he really started to excel as a warrior boarding enemy vessels or repelling attackers on his own ship. Eventually they hunted down a notorious pirate prince and it was at that moment they met their match. The prince and his crew put all the dwarves to the sword and locked Maegor in the brig before sinking the ship so he’d drown. Just when Maegor thought all hope was lost a mermaid swam into the ship and freed him, swimming him to the surface and helping him to the shore. She told him that he didn’t belong in the depths and that he was “too ugly for the sea” and then left him on shore full of rage and looking for vengeance. He followed a lead that someone in Red Larch might have a lead on the location of the pirate prince.
